CeraBur® Ceramic Burs by Komet for Conservative Deep Caries Removal
Komet CeraBur® ceramic rosehead burs are designed for controlled, tactile excavation of carious soft dentine while helping preserve healthier tooth structure. Made from fully milled zirconia, they offer a smooth, corrosion-free alternative to traditional metal caries excavation burs.

Deep caries management is not just about removing decay quickly. The clinical challenge is removing what needs to be removed while preserving as much tooth structure as possible. CeraBur® is useful because it gives a different tactile feel from conventional metal burs and is designed for controlled soft dentine excavation. There are different philosophies regarding the removal of deep caries; however, the CeraBur can ensure that all soft caries are completely removed prior to restoration. The surgical length burs can provide optimal visualisation while doing this delicate procedure and can also be combined with caries indicator gel. When the pulp tissue is exposed, we recommend the use of one-fil putty to create a biological framework for pulp and tissues to attach, an alkaline environment, a biocompatible material, to provide optimal conditions to allow the pulp to retain vitality.

Which CeraBur® option should I choose?
22 mm standard length burs
Best for: Routine restorative dentistry and standard cavity preparation access.
Options: Size 10, 12, 14, 16, 18, 21, 23 and 27 are available as 5 packs.
26 mm long length burs
Best for: Deeper access or cases where additional bur length helps visibility and reach.
Options: Size 10, 14, 18 and 23 are available as 5 packs.
22 mm assorted kit
Best for: Clinicians trying CeraBur® or wanting the most commonly used standard-length sizes.
Kit contents: 8 burs, with 2 each of K1SM.204.010, K1SM.204.014, K1SM.204.018 and K1SM.204.023.
26 mm assorted kit
Best for: Practices wanting a long-shank starter selection for deeper restorative access.
Clinical note: Useful when longer reach is preferred while maintaining the tactile feel of ceramic excavation.

Research note
The existing Toothsaver page notes that, in a study prepared by Queen Mary University of London, CeraBur® showed a service life three times longer than a round tungsten carbide bur.
As with all caries excavation, use clinical judgement, appropriate magnification, radiographic assessment and caries management principles when deciding how much dentine to remove.
